Patient Preparation for Colonoscopy


Comprehensive Instructions for Using Magnesium Sulfate

To ensure a successful and accurate colonoscopy, please carefully follow the preparation steps below. The patient must obtain three (3) sachets of Magnesium Sulfate (30g each) from the pharmacy and adhere to these detailed instructions.


TWO DAYS BEFORE THE EXAMINATION

  • The last meal should be consumed by 8:00 PM two days before the examination.

ONE DAY BEFORE THE EXAMINATION

  1. At 8:00 AM:
    • Dissolve 1.5 sachets of Magnesium Sulfate in half a glass of cold water and drink it.
    • Wait 30 minutes and then drink 1 glass of cold natural water.
    • Throughout the day, consume at least 3 liters of clear liquids (e.g., water, broth, or light-colored beverages).
  2. At 5:00 PM:
    • Dissolve the remaining 1.5 sachets of Magnesium Sulfate in half a glass of cold water and drink it.
    • Wait 30 minutes and then drink 1 glass of cold natural water.
    • Throughout the evening, consume at least 3 liters of clear liquids.

ON THE DAY OF THE EXAMINATION

  • Do not consume any food or liquids on the day of the examination.
  • Arrive at the clinic at the scheduled time.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Liquids Allowed:

  • Only clear, transparent liquids are permitted. Avoid red-colored liquids.
  • Recommended: clear broth (essential), water, or lightly sweetened water.

Bowel Movements:

  • Frequent bowel movements will occur after taking Magnesium Sulfate and consuming the specified liquids. Plan to stay at home the day before the procedure.

Medication Guidelines:

  1. Blood Thinners:
    • Discontinue at least 3 days prior to the procedure, as advised by your physician.
    • Always consult your prescribing physician before stopping blood thinners.
    • After the procedure, resume your usual medication as directed.
  2. Diabetes Medications:
    • Take half of your usual medication dose on the day of the examination.
  3. Hypertension Medications:
    • Do not take morning medications on the day of the procedure. Resume your normal routine after the examination.
  4. Other Medications:
    • Unless otherwise directed, continue regular medications with a small amount of water.

Accompaniment:

  • The patient must be accompanied by a family member or relative on the day of the procedure.

Failure to adhere to any part of these preparation guidelines may result in the cancellation of your examination.
